Founded in Atlanta in 1933, AJMLS was one of the first integrated Southern law schools. It was not until 2005 that it was approved by the American Bar Association (ABA). In October 2017, the ABA concluded that the Law School did not meet ABA standards 301(a), 309(b), and 501(a)/501(b), and in December 2018, the ABA placed the school on probation for “significant” and “persistent” noncompliance with these standards. At its November 2019 meeting, the Board revoked the law school’s probation status. The standard was amended in 2019 to state that at least 75 percent of graduates of accredited law schools taking the bar exam must pass the bar exam within two years of graduation. On February 26, 2021, the ABA Council released news that the school now meets the standard.
In late 2011, AJMLS opened a branch campus in Savannah, Georgia, called the Savannah Law School. In March 2018, the Law School announced that its Savannah campus would no longer accept applications for 2018 and would offer current students the option of continuing their legal education in Savannah, transferring to the main Atlanta campus, or seeking to transfer or visit other schools. A class-action lawsuit on behalf of Savannah Law School students alleges that the Savannah school was closed to benefit the Atlanta Alma mater.
