BCIT was originally established in 1960 as a British Columbia vocational school. When BCIT opened its Burnaby campus in 1964, its initial enrollment was 498 students. As of 2017, there were 18,755 full-time students and 30,593 part-time students. Since its inception, the institution has more than 125,000 alumni.
In 1960, the British Columbia Vocational School (BCVS) was established in Burnaby and opened in Willingdon and Canada Way. It is the first permanent trade school of its kind in British Columbia; its programs include woodworking, welding and aircraft maintenance. A year later, plans for the British Columbia Institute of Technology were announced on adjacent land. It was the first provincial institution in British Columbia dedicated to higher technical education, and its principal was named in 1962. It provides education in the fields of engineering, business and health, enrolling 498 students in 1964. In 1966, it celebrated its first graduates.
