Nottingham Trent University is named after the river because the city of Nottingham is located on the river Trent (River Trent). Nottingham Trent University was formerly known as the Nottingham Government School of Design, now the Nottingham Trent University School of Art and Design. Founded in 1843, it was expanded into a comprehensive university in 1992.
