Serving more than 90,000 students worldwide, UMGC is one of the largest distance learning institutions in the world. UMGC is a product of the University of Maryland’s Adult Evening Programs starting in the 1920s. In 1947, the School of Special and Continuing Studies (CSCS) was established. In 1959, CSCS was renamed University College of Maryland (UMUC). In 1970, UMUC became an independent institution, and in 1988 it became a member of the University of Maryland System. UMUC previously had an international campus in Schwaebisch Gmuend, Germany (near Stuttgart) until 2002. It also ran a residential campus in Munich, Germany for two years from 1950 to 1992, then moved to Augsburg, Germany from 1993 to 1994, and then to Mannheim, Germany in 1995, before finally closing in 2005 . The residential campus offers a two-year associate degree primarily serving U.S. high school graduates military and government personnel stationed in Europe. In 2008, UMUC offered courses at more than 130 military facilities across Europe, the Middle East and Asia. In 2004, UMUC shared the ICDE Excellence Award from the International Council for Open and Distance Education. In fiscal 2015, UMGC offered live classes in 20 countries around the world, enrolling nearly 11,000 students in Asia and Europe.
