Chartered and incorporated into the State of Illinois, the college’s first residence was located on Capitol Street opposite the Presbyterian Hospital. In 1920, the college’s enrollment grew to the point where a larger facility was needed, so it purchased a five-story building at 20 N Ashland and renamed it the “National College of Chiropractic.” In 1927, the college established its first clinic, the “Chicago General Health Service,” which operated until 2008. In 1942, the college became a non-profit educational and research institution under the corporate laws of the state of Illinois and the U.S. state of Illinois. The U.S. Department of the Treasury governs tax-exempt institutions.
In 1963, National University relocated its campus to Lombardy, Illinois in the Chicago suburb that still stands today. In 1968, the New York College of Chiropractic merged into the National University of the United States. In 2000, it adopted the university structure and changed its name to the National University of Health Sciences. In 2009, the university joined forces with St. Petersburg College, a public community college in St. Petersburg, Florida, to offer the Doctor of Chiropractic degree on the St. Petersburg College campus.
