The University of Vienna is the largest university in Austria and one of the largest universities in Europe, with more than 90,000 students, 15 colleges and 5 research centers, as well as more than 80 buildings, scattered in various districts of Vienna. The old and magnificent main campus is located in the first district of Vienna. The Vienna Municipal Hospital is also affiliated to the University of Vienna. The University of Vienna is a member of the Association of European Universities, the Union of European Capital Universities, the Association of European Research Universities, and the European University Foundation.
The original form of the University of Vienna was founded on 12 March 1365 by Duke Rudolf IV and his brothers Alberecht III and Leopold III. It was the second university of the Holy Roman Empire and the second German-language university in the world (the first being Charles University of Prague), and was originally opened on the model of the University of Paris. In 1383, when the University of Vienna was not doing well, Rudolf IV’s brother and Alberecht III donated money to reform its administration and become the first university in the German-speaking east.
